Mexico is at the forefront of marine research with a project that uses portable underwater ultrasound to study the giant manta ray ( Mobula birostris ). Although similar techniques have been attempted in the past, this is the first time it has been achieved with the scientific backing, specialized equipment, and coordination necessary to obtain accurate data without causing stress to the animals.

Results that change the conservation perspective

Thanks to a combination of ultrasound, satellite tagging, and laser photogrammetry , the project will be able to identify key areas for manta ray reproduction and feeding. It has also revealed that many manta rays migrate outside protected areas, moving through ocean corridors where they face risks such as bycatch. This information paves the way for more effective protection strategies , designed to safeguard not only the species but also the marine ecosystems that depend on it.

An achievement that reflects the potential of science in Mexico

The giant manta ray, a symbol of Mexican oceans and an endangered species, finds in this effort an unprecedented opportunity for its long-term protection. This project demonstrates how science , technology, and collaboration can generate real solutions and make Mexico an international leader in the defense of its marine biodiversity.

Challenges and next steps for the protection of the giant manta ray in Mexico

The progress achieved with the use of underwater ultrasound and other technologies marks a milestone in the conservation of the giant manta ray, but it also opens the door to important challenges that must be faced to ensure long-term success .

One of the main challenges is securing consistent funding to ensure the continuity of the research. Studies of this kind require specialized equipment, field trips, and trained personnel, which entails a significant investment. Maintaining this active effort is essential to continue generating robust data that will allow us to understand the reproductive and migratory patterns of the species.

Another key point is ensuring that these scientific findings reach decision-makers . The information obtained can become the basis for expanding or creating new protected areas and designing more effective measures against threats such as bycatch or habitat degradation. Translating science into public policy and concrete actions is the next major step to guarantee the survival of this endangered species.

The project not only seeks to gain knowledge, but to transform it into real solutions that protect the giant manta ray and strengthen Mexico's commitment to the conservation of its seas.
